Sport Psychology

“Life is a game” by now we’ve heard this. Well comparing life to being on the field of whatever sport we choose, there is one thing that is an absolute must…

Valuing A Referee!

Yep VAR is not just for football advancement creating more fair play especially as we noticed at World Cup 2018 https://wired868.com/2018/07/27/dissecting-var-and-tts-world-cup-lessons-downer-fenwick-merere-maylee-and-ramdhan-discuss/ but VAR is that thing that we all at one point or the other are going to need to bring in and put to use in our own game…

As in the World Cup VAR…during our game of life, we would get a signal or a plea from another that we better consult our VAR…

Our signal might include… a disagreement that stops things from going on as they were before, an unacceptable behaviour (let’s call it a ‘foul’) that calls for our attention…

Our VAR would come in when whoever is involved in the conflict with us and ourselves, have made our attempts to settle things but still cannot seem to agree..

That is when we do the sign, you know that ‘box sign’ where whoever is involved agree to Value A REFEREE…

Our VAR might be an elder, a specialist in some field, a spiritual leader, you name it…

But the main thing is, there is a mutual agreement that this VAR can get it right, like the complaints about the VAR @t the World Cup 2018, it might take some time but the basic idea is that it is worth the wait to resolving the conflict…and then all involved feel satisfied that all was done to address concerns in a fair matter…

VAR then is really about small-scale social justice that helps us maintain civil relationships in this game of lifehttps://wired868.com/2018/07/27/dissecting-var-and-tts-world-cup-lessons-downer-fenwick-merere-maylee-and-ramdhan-discuss/

#conflictresolution #mediation…

@https://karryon.privacemail.com/

we can become your VAR…combining technology #livechat at an online office for mediating/resolving person-person conflict at home/office

So now the Central America and Caribbean Games have begun… and we have the Mexico Women spanking Trinidad & Tobago Women 5-1….https://wired868.com/2018/07/21/cac-mexico-women-spank-t-mens-u-20-warriors-lose-2-0-to-honduras/

Good Spanks! good for the ‘spanked’ and great for the ‘spankee’ (Mexico)….

Only in Sports does the ‘spankee’ (one doing the spanking) know that they deserved to spank, why …. #the team worked hard, #the team played a great game… and most importantly #the team spanked a team that was in their category and level

For parents is it great being a ‘spankee’?

Not sue about our Central America context but for sure in the Caribbean ‘spanks’ or ‘licks’ is widely practiced….. but the question is can parents really feel great about it? answer …honestly is no…. #parent spanks is an admittance that all else has failed #parent spanks is actually (no matter how we look at it) a use of their greater authority and power to inflict pain to ‘force’ a response (which in no way means the child understands why the behaviour is wrong or will not do that thing again if they think they can escape spanks)

And most importantly in Sports, spanks are good for the spanked ….

for e.g. this T&T Women’s team after getting SPANKS, know they…

Should

Prepare

And

Nourish

Kindred

Skills

….. Yes getting SPANKS in Sports signals to the team that in the future there is a greater need to better prepare by working on nourishing or building kindred (the group/collective/team) skills to a level where they are better prepared for their opponents…

………..So SPANKS in Sports can #motivate and even #inspire in the future

But are spanks good for children?

When children get spanks they are learning that using power to force people to do what you want is okay, they are learning to externalize aggression, they might be learning to subdue or stifle their emotions/thoughts, and they are learning to give way to others regulating their behaviours….https://www.healthline.com/health/parenting/spanking-pros-and-cons

Unlike Sports there is no motivation within the child necessarily to improve any skill for the joy of it..but simply a desire to avoid that negative experience again…

To get the good spanks impact like sports, what parents might want to consider are using a range of means to discipline, show consequences of choices appropriate to the level of the child so that the child

Shows Progress Accepting New Keepable (worthy of keeping) Skills (which is actually what the parent desires, that the child would stop some behaviour and start and keep doing some new skill)https://positiveparenting.com/9-things-to-do-instead-of-spanking/

Backing Belgium all the way…and not in a fair-weather way…

so Belgium came out attacking and ready … #carryon prepare and play purposefully …

but wait… heard the commentator mention a few of the players from Belgium missed practice…and there is a #carryon tip…to go the long haul… rest and recovery is an essential

France France France … got to love how these young Frenchmen played…young team..they seemed almost to be warming up and getting adjusted to playing the Belgians…

#carryontip do the SWOT analysis…

after a while this team just got into this game, the goalkeeper great save to ensure there was NOT a Belgian lead…the great pace of Mgappe and the other players though proved a hazard to … to the Belgians..

#carryontip do your homework…they understood the Belgian team..its strengths and weaknesses..they kept a good mark on who needed and had key intercepting moments to stop gal scoring

As for the Belgium team..they played great football alright..Hazard looking for the opportunities but Lukaku seeming a bit off today…it happens…yet they played as a team

Actually the both teams did so..

showing why they reached where they did

Belgium players and coaches had a game plan, heard about the WM Formation and they worked it..

and for the first half it was a okay…

what we do in the BREAK MATTERS!

NOT sure what France said or did during the break but it worked and head ball won the game Umtiti delivered alright https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX_f0iRMq4Y

so was it age, pace, experience, a header…what gave France the edge…

maybe a little of all coming together…

well done Belgium

and surely these young Frenchmen got the pace and the stamina Qui! Qui! we wait to find out what happens next…ah gold cup maybe http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-07-11/world-cup-semi-final-france-v-belgium-live-blog/9977718

Lol…so admit took a while to get to this one…partly its the energy of these Boo hoo..Brazilian fans … {myself might be included…lol}

But hey Messi and Argentina are OUT …

Ronaldo and Portugal are OUT…

and so WorldCup2018 shows a big #carryon reminder ..the game goes on…

and on it went with Sweden being challenged by England…might mention though … that it was touch to notice Sweden with England on the field…

England has a ‘Young’ PLAYER literally …but that’s not all..their players are generally quite young…including captain Kane who has shown himself on this World Stage…as has Maguire… these individual players and the team alike have shown the promise of youth…

and all that under a young SouthGate coach 38 who has been noted for has been noted for the strategic playing of his players on the field…

#carryontip be not intimidated by experience for we can only get experience by confidently experiencing ourselves…

and this seems what this English team is showing us clearly  https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-cup/2018/07/04/england-unpleasant-surprise-world-cup-quarter-final-says-sweden/

Exceptional goal by Maguire too

And now for these Russians…

{aside} surprise is an understatement when noticing how Russia was progressing through this World Cup …and then the commentator in that Russia Croatia match got the word….

a team that too everyone’s estimation, or at least most everyone was “over-performing”

Remarkable Russia…http://www.latimes.com/sports/soccer/la-sp-world-cup-russia-croatia-20180707-story.html

#carryontip others might count us out but it hardly serves us to count ourselves out…if anything why not use that energy to spiral us forward…

Well for Russia, might have been some of that pluus a desire to bring some pride to their countrymen…

all would agree to reach as far as they did then play Croatia…

Croatia OBVIOUSLY the stronger team, clear ball domination, yet Remarkable Russia stuck with it defended best possible and even scored first then kept it to a draw, with added time and extra time and still to go to penalities…

#carryontip for Croatia..take no thing and nothing for granted…plan, prepare, play, adjust and adapt…

Clearly Croatia played well…and

oh that goal keeper what #sportsmanship.. what a #teamplayer..

#Russia remain home but still shown that Exit gate instead of the English Southgate

#playon… because the play is on!

Serbia ahead….its easy to get comfortable when ahead and having won before…but ahhhhh…. a win before is past-time and we need to always keep in the game as it is being played in the present … good #carryon then from Our Serbian Team…..

build from the past…but keep your head in the game even when ahead …

Now some might say the way Switzerland was playing their win was bound to come….and true the Switzerland team seemed to have the edge in this game…but let us give them KUDDOS….

they came in one-down, only having a draw and then getting a goal on them…

Yet yet…this team kept going and came from behind to score one goal….. and equalize…..

so they might be called “Turtle of the Match” but even the turtle can reach its target with consistency… so #carryon message simple…#keepgoing

Now let’s also talk about Player Influence …. we all matter in the game of life…and boy oh boy…did Shaqiri matter…. watching him on the field he kept focus on that goal…and eventually his time game to score one for the team….and what a beautiful goal it was…unfazed by his 2 opponents..he kept cool and calm to carefully and skillfully https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hhKXGMihDI

#carryon do not under=estimate potential and if at first you don’t succeed then try and try again!

Spirited commentator, spirited fans and a spirited game between Denmark and Australia….

Football gurus commented on the high price Australia though playing great football…paid for not monitoring Chrisitan Eriksen who scored what has been described as AN ABSOLUTELY AWESOME goal… https://www.foxsports.com/soccer/video/1260751427771

and what a #carryon lesson…in the game of life we need to do our SWOT analysis ….Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats …we need to make good use of 2 of them and find ways to support 2 of them to better our #carryon

But all was not lost for Australian Team…for while they did not monitor Christian Eriksen, thankfully for them….

VAR was monitoring…

and when VIDEO ASSISTANT REFEREE picked up that “unnatural hand position” VAR saved the day for this team….

and so it was Australia was given a penalty…(a penalty for Denmark who might have relaxed forgetting that #eyes #computereyes were on them and would miss nothing) great system for

SOCIAL JUSTICE IN FOOTBALL

and so it was a look at the video…and Aussie team was kept alive…

same way part of our #carryon is finding our SOCIAL SUPPORT SYSTEMS … that have our backs…that would show us things that we might be missing and help us to #carryon…

Great invention for World Cup Football the VAR… https://www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2018-06-20/world-cup-2018-var-video-referee-how-does-it-work-russia-decisions-explained/

Iran intensely defended from the blow of the whistle…remarkable defense…

this team knew that a goalless draw would be in their favour…they knew that Spain would come out attacking going for goal, for Spain needed a win….

it was as if there plan was to intensely defend and keep that ball out of the net….

but ….Spain Operated Probabilities

they kept taking shots at the goal…most off point…but it did not matter…

they were working with the law of probabilities …the more chances taken…the increased probability of success…

and they were patient and patient and patient for all of 45 mins plus added time in that first half…

and so it is #carryon and be patient…keep at it, and be patient efforts eventually pay off….

Back to Iran

the unexpected…after Spain scored, in went a goal but not a qualifying goal for Iran… ah hum bug…but that is how it goes in the game of football and life…having to bounce right back from disappointment and this Iranian team did so quite well..and continued to defend….

but one thing that might have been the tricky area for Iranian Defensive match was ….

we cannot pre-empt or predict in full…

yes of course it was a great plan to play defense with Spain and it went well…but the what if? plan is important…and it did not seem that Iran had that what if?plan as tight for if Spain scored how to regroup quickly to equalize…

so a takeaway might be plan and be strategic but be ready with a #backup plan or two because the game is just that a game and it does not always go to our plan

Every Sport Plays Nicesty

What does that mean? Simple! As much as sports hold rules. As much as there is need for good sportsmanship. An important part of sport is offensive, attacking, aggressing, pushing, launching. And equally so …an important part of sport is defensive, retreating, protecting, running, avoiding.

So those who are too nice are in trouble!

Also those who are too naughty or nasty are in trouble!

But what works is when the sportsperson or the team build a good strategy, develop their skills and instincts around being nicesty.

http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland-cavaliers

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/story/news.html

And that is where we can learn from viewing sports….thinking about ESPN we can

Create

A

Victory

Stance!

#CAVS …. in this case we can all become a fan of ‘CAVS’…whether in our relationships with our partners at home or work, with our children, when dealing with habits we need to begin or stop…we need to cheer on ‘CAVS’…

and part of that is knowing when to …

be nice….go easy on ourselves and appreciate all that we are doing….

be nasty….be tough on ourselves and challenge ourselves to get with it and do better

and that is only the beginning….

have you ever seen how the #coach stands on the sidelines taking in a game

2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship bronze medal match_ Russia 5 – 3 Finland Pictures _ Getty Imageshttp://www.karryonservices.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/2017-IIHF-Ice-Hockey-World-Championship-bronze-medal-match_-Russia-5-3-Finland-Pictures-_-Getty-Images.html

usually they are thing up of a stance/strategy/plan

…so after cheering for ‘CAVS’ what’s the plan? #lifecoachinghttps://karryon.privacemail.com/

or something else maybe…but please let it be something! #go ‘CAVS’

On reviewing Mind Gym, Ben Grenshaw noted;

” Believing in yourself is paramount to success for any athlete”

Life is a Game

Mind Gym is a perfect explanation of what we enter when we enter this life…each experience we meet challenges us to exercise our minds…those of us who think/feel/act for one minute as if we can cruise through this life lazy about exercising our minds, we wake one day to discover that others are

FEEDING AND TRAINING ….or minds

and this F.A.T. is often times unhealthy…. so today for starters what sort of exercises have you began in your Mind Gym?

Even for athletes guess what Yogi Berra said;

” Ninety percent of the game is half mental”

And trust me I’ve been there and we all either have been there or will get there…

Where is there? That place where you need to train @ your Mind Gym a bit more often and a bit harder because of the road ahead…to really be able to deal with that marathon/obstacle course …..

So to all our Gym goers looking nice and fit….remember what Bruce Jenner said;

” you have to train your mind like you train your body”

because what you think affects how you feel and perform…
